Borobudur is a magnificent architectural monument located in Central Java. It is the largest Buddhist temple in the world and also a stunning example of ancient Indonesian architecture. Build in the 9th century, Borobudur has been a major pilgrimage site for years but then was strangely abandoned in the 15th century. It was rediscovered in 1815. Buried under volcanic ash. Yet, the temple’s former majesty was first restored in the 1970s, after the Indonesian government and UNESCO worked together. The restoration took eight years to complete. Today, Borobudur has already been declared a UNESCO WORLD Heritage Site.
